Bianca McDonnell is trained as a lawyer in Australia and New York and speecialises in public international law and international arbitration.


Summary

Bianca McDonnell joined Armesto & Asociados in 2017 to work in a team with founding partner Juan Fernández-Armesto. Bianca participates in investment and international commercial arbitration proceedings, on cases administrated by ICSID or the ICC, and ad hoc proceedings under the UNCITRAL Rules.

Bianca graduated from Georgetown Law’s Master of Laws (LL.M.) in International Legal Studies with a Certificate in International Arbitration and Dispute Resolution on the Dean’s List and with Distinction. She is sponsored by the United States Department of Commerce’s Commercial Law Development Program, to train the Sri Lankan APIIT Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot team, and acted as arbitrator at the Willem C. Vis East Moot Competition in 2018.


Experience in Arbitration

In 2017 Bianca McDonnell joined Armesto & Asociados to work in a team with founding partner Juan Fernández-Armesto. Bianca participates in arbitration proceedings, including international, ad hoc and administered arbitrations involving commercial and investment disputes.

Most of the cases are administered by the ICC and ICSID. As for the ad hoc arbitrations, most are subject to the UNCITRAL Rules.

Before joining Armesto & Asociados, Bianca obtained her Master of Laws (LL.M) in International Legal Studies with a Certificate in International Arbitration and Dispute Resolution at Georgetown University Law Center. She graduated with Distinction, was a Dean´s List Honoree and attained a GPA of 3.97/4.00. During the second semester she completed an externship at Three Crowns LLP´s Washington D.C. office. Bianca represented Georgetown University Law Center at the Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot in Vienna and the Florida International University Miami Vis Pre-Moot. Bianca is a coach of the Sri Lankan Asia Pacific Institute of Information Technology Vis Moot team.


Professional Experience

Bianca completed a four-month externship at Three Crowns LLP’s Washington D.C. office whilst completing her LL.M. Prior to obtaining her LL.M., Bianca completed a six-month clerkship at the United Nations International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia in The Hague, for Judge and President, Carmel Agius. During the completion of her law degree in Sydney, Bianca worked as a law clerk for barrister Tania Evers, at Frederick Jordan Chambers, and assisted lawyers at Sparke Helmore Lawyers and Clear View Lawyers. She additionally completed a three-month internship at Human Rights Watch in Sydney in 2015.


Education

Bianca obtained her Master of Laws (LL.M.) in International Legal Studies with a Certificate in International Arbitration and Dispute Resolution at Georgetown Law. She graduated at the top of her class, attaining a GPA of 3.97. Bianca was the Co-President and Founder of the United Nations Association – Georgetown Law, and was an LL.M. Editor of the Georgetown Journal of International Law. Bianca represented Georgetown Law at the Willem C. Vis Moot Competition in Vienna in 2017. Bianca is awaiting admission to the New York Bar.

Bianca graduated with First Class Honours from her Bachelor of Laws at the University of Technology, Sydney. Bianca received a High Distinction for her research honours thesis on: ‘Establishing the Individual Criminal Responsibility for International Crimes Perpetrated by Members of ISIL in Syria and Iraq.’ Bianca was an appointed by faculty as a judge of the Student Misconduct and Appeals Committee, volunteered with Anti-Slavery Australia, and participated in various moot court competitions. Bianca completed an exchange program at Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Milan.

Bianca completed her Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice and is eligible for admission to the New South Wales Legal Professions Admission Board.
